On this page you will find answers to the most common questions about the network. If you have further questions you can contact the network administrators in the office hours, or email
You may have no connection in the following cases:
No, the board has decided not to allow this, since it is not necessary, and it would depend on either digging down a cable or making modifications to our telephone central.
The only advantage of an ADSL connection is that there are fewer restrictions. This can be overcome using the alternative connections Jaynet and Bolignet that K-net also offer.
If you use the normal network connection at the dormitory, all your traffic goes through a firewall managed by K-Net located at DTU. The firewall requires that you log on to it before using the Internet. You will be able to see www.nybro.dk without being logged on to the Internet.
Download and install K-Net Utility from the page telling you to do so.
When to arrow on the icon in the lower right corner becomes green, you are correctly logged on. You will however have to close your Internet browser and start it again before you will have access to the Internet.
Open Finder, chose Applications and then Utilities. Start the program Terminal. When this has opened, type the following:
ssh -T
where nykXXX is the login name you have received from the networksadministrationen.
If you are inside the dormitory network and you are not logged on to any of the alternative internet providers (Jaynet, Bolignet, etc.) you can use mail.nybro.dk as outgoing mail server (SMTP server). If your mail program asks for encryption method, you should choose no encryption.
Note if it is a laptop computer that you some times use outside the dormitory network, that this mail server will not work when outside the dormitory network. We here refer to one of the big mail providers instead, for example www.gmail.com . As well as webmail Gmail also provides SMTP for your mail program, if you very much want to use a specific mail program (see GMails help-pages for instructions on this).
Yes, you can set up your own router with access point if you
You must ensure the wall plug is connected to the special “Internet” or “WAN” port of your router. This is very important. Failure of doing so will cause conenction problems for everyone. A diagram illustrating this can be seen below.
To set a password on its wireless network, follow the instructions that came with the router. It is a requirement that you have a password on it.

If you connect your gaming console directly to the wall plug your game console will likely display an error because it is not logged on to K-Net. There exists several ways to connect your gaming console to the Internet through K-Knet. The method described here is basically using a so called router to share your Internet address (IP address) among your computers and gaming consoles, so that you can use your computer to log on to K-Net. You must buy a router yourself. The cheapest routers at the moment are typically combined with access points for wireless networks. In the network group we recommend the model WRT54GL from the manufacterer Linksys. A picture of one of these can be seen to the right. Other models and manufacterers can also be used of course, as long as they have router functionality (some times called Internet sharing functionality).
Your router is to be attached as described in “Can I set up my own router with access point?” above. Your computer and your gaming consoles goes in the normal ports. If your gaming console uses wireless network it should be wirelessly connected to you access point. For your gaming consoles to be able to access the Internet, your computer must be turned on and logged on to K-Net.
A diagram illustrating the setup can be seen below.
If you have been banned from K-net and you can’t live without internet until K-net grants you internet agian, there are two other providers you can contact: Jaynet & BoligNet. See more about these providers at K-net.
You can connect to these providers without registration at K-net and you can register for either of them if you can’t wait for your registration at K-net to finish.
Remember that you at K-net always can follow your usage on the K-net connection.
